Meet Lorian Bartle, A Classical Guitarist Changing the Face of Music

Being a classical guitarist in today’s musical environment is no mean feat. Classical guitarists work in the interstices of classical music, folk and instrumental music. Their genres defy easy categorization and this is what makes the work of Lorian Bartle so memorable. Hers is a musicality devoted to the classics with a strong contemporary sensibility.

For example, Ave Maria there is a forceful discipline and an engaging breathiness to the movements. Hers is a quintessentially modern yet warm embrace of the notes and technical challenges such a composition presents itself. With her commitment to luxury and sparseness in her performances, it is easy to see why Lorian Bartle is one of the more memorable and exciting classical guitarists working today.

Having performed throughout the Colorado Front Range, Ms. Bartle is also an avid outdoorswoman who utilizes her extensive hiking and camping expeditions as breeding grounds for new musical ideas. Having explored the far reaches of the Grand Canyon, the Rocky Mountains, and other exciting wildernesses of the United States and Canada, Ms. Bartle proclaims the inspiration such scenic and untouched environments provide her as a musician and a music teacher:

“I just love the outdoors. I love the excitement of exploring areas that are not inhabited and the natural beauty of a good rain shower or snowstorm. For me, being outdoors in the wilderness is an aspect of who I am as a person and a guitarist.”

Ms. Bartle’s reputation as an educator and performer continues to grow with each year. Pavan Vaddey, a music reasearcher and critic in Oregon comments on Lorian Bartle’s unique playing style:

“I was fortunate enough to see a performance that featured Lorian Bartle at a library concert series in Colorado recently. I couldn’t help but be captivated by her graceful determination in the interpretation she gave to a lovely 16th-century English composition. I was transfixed and so were the other audience members fortunate enough to bear witness to the lovely music.”

While playing music may be the foundation of her expression as an artist, Lorian Bartle also finds particular gratification through teaching her craft. “I’ve always loved the interaction with my pupils and being the inspiration for their maturation as musicians, even if they do not all go on to become touring professionals.”
